Ducati 750 Sport – (Getting) Ready to race

Introduction:

I once crashed a 1990 Ducati Supersport, wich is on the first glimpse quite similar to the 750 Sport models. SInce parts for these were already rare in 2011, I decided to buy a 750Sport to scavange it for parts. I discovered that barely any of the parts from the 750 model fit right on to the 900 Supersport of that era, so the 750Sport went into my parents barn and sat there for almost 10 years. Now came a time, when I thought that maybe participating in classic racing endeavours, or at least riding a classic on the track might actually be fun. Lucky me, I still had the old Sport sitting there, ready to be transformed into a working, fun motorcycle.
So the story began.

st The Sport in its current state, most of the engineering and manufacturing is done, only the exhaust system and the rear brake are missing.

The plan is, as said above, to get the 750Sport to a point where you can safely drive it on a racetrack without being limited to much by the „old“ standards. With that in mind, we still wanted it to look and feel like a good old pre 1990 Ducati. The thing that we planned on changing were at first, the standard procedure to get any bike more or less ready for the track: get rid of all the stuff you don’t need and try to lose some weight by doing so. That said, all the obsolete stuff was just taken out. Things like the Lighting system and its electrical operators as well as the ingnition lock. One thing, that we were sure about in the first place was, that we wanted to have 17″ rims to be able to support modern day tires and get rid of the old 16″ stock ones. Although I am quite fond of the old rim design, we replaced them with Ducati St2 parts that became available on short notice. Sure, they’re not top notch compared with modern compound or magnesium rims, but surely a cheap and solid pick. In addition, we took the St2s front end, using the same technique that I used to fit the St2 upper fork bridge to my Ducati monster, and realised a nice looking, properly working front end that way.
