Intoduction:
The engineering school I visited required an engineering project to be performed and documented. In my case, the choice was quickly made: I wanted to build a motorcycle chassis from scratch, in this case, accompanied by a solid planning phase, component tension evaluation and documentation. Not required, but still performed was the manufacturing of the piece.
The idea was influenced and more or less based on the design leads that I had with the Bullet- and the NSU projects: Have an unconcentionel front end, a steel-tube type chassis, and a classy, more to the 1930’s oriented type of look, while providing compareable to modern bikes riding geometry.
Summary:
- design of the whole thing, partitioning of the individual parts
- shaping the entire idea, (how is it actually supposed to look like)
- design, evaluation (material tensioning and geometrical layout) and creation of CAD- data for the front end girder fork.
- evaluating the entire chassis geometry
- design and manufacturing of the mainframe
- design evaluation of the seat and the fuel container section
design evaluation and first attempts:
The thesis was performed as a group, with the divided responsibilitys and competences, since the entire thing would have been to extensive for the given amount of time. I personally was occupied with the idea, the shape evaluation, manufacturing of the metal-made parts, the entire procedure regarding the front end as well as the general geometry layout. A group of two was covering the design process, the shape interaction and the surface creation of the seating and fuel tank units, as well as representative matters like a virtual reality performance, mid-term mockups and general digital visualisation. As sad part of the storya,a fourth group member was supposed to cover the shaping, geometry layout and CAD-design as well as material tension evaluation of the mainframe. Sadly, the task was not performed in a productive and usable way, so the actual frame was improvised by the author, following his design sketching.
